Kondwa/PaKechele
Established in 2000 to help orphaned and vulnerable children, Kondwa Day Centre for Orphans offers free pre-school education and nourishing meals to children aged 3 to 7. It is based in the Ng’ombe compound, one of the poorest compounds in Lusaka, Zambia. Co-founded by Angela Malik, a Zambian woman, Kondwa also provides psychosocial care and emotional support to children who are dealing with loss and grief having lost their parents to AIDS.
In 2010, based on the need for children attending Kondwa Day Centre for Orphans to move to a primary school, Angela Malik started PaKechele Primary School. With support from many donors, including the CBC Monkstown Immersion Project, the school has prospered. Teaching from Grade 1 to 7 is provided. A special class for deaf pupils is operational. In 2018, a secondary school was started to cater for the pupils moving on to Grade 8 -12, and the primary and secondary schools together now have over 600 pupils enrolled. As well as education, pupils receive two meals, breakfast and lunch, each day. Psychosocial care, support and counselling is provided. A small vegetable patch on the school property was made available where guardians can grow some food such as maize and other vegetables to generate income for the school.
Kondwa/PaKechele has been supported financially since 2003 by Dr Edmond Prendiville’s annual cycle and latterly, CPS fundraising.
